Transdermal Magnesium - An efficient way to a Better You
Divine readers, thank you for being here. Today we’ll be discussing the fabulous healing benefits of Magnesium and I’d love to share my Top Ten Tips on how to find your Magnesi-zen to support health & wellbeing. More specifically I’d like to share my positive experience of using topical Magnesium, a convenient and effective alternative to tablets and capsules, provided by BetterYou. Their transdermal magnesium range is the perfect way to supplement the vital nutrient which is commonly overlooked yet crucial for healthy bones, improved sleep and higher functioning/performance of the muscular system.
What is Magnesium?
As mentioned, magnesium is a mineral that's crucial for body functionality. The scientific mumbo-jumbo of what it’s essential for, is DNA and protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, as well as energy production. Magnesium is also important in maintaining nerve impulse transmission and for creating numerous enzymatic reactions, which is pretty damn important, right?
Over the last few years I’ve been eating a 98% Plant based diet, with the exception of an organic free range egg, here & there, I’ve often been curious if I’m getting the full doses of nutrients for optimal wellbeing and this lead me to getting myself tested with Circle DNA. The results were fascinating in a broad spectrum of wellbeing categories and it was useful for me to find out which Nutrients I have a higher need for, as my body does not absorb them quite so easily as others, including vitamin B6, Iodine, Selenium & Anti-oxidants. (The B6 would explain my bodies craving for eggs after becoming Vegan and I’m glad I listened to my body.)
As well as the usual B12 that plant-based consumers are advised to take and the best by far I have tried is the Vegan daily oral spray, also produced by the first company to develop fast acting oral spray nutrients, BetterYou.
Although I discovered that my Magnesium levels were predicted to be relatively regular, I am genetically a higher-risk experiencer of Migraines, which can also be caused by low magnesium levels. In general, I think it’s important to remember that modern diet and pressured lifestyles have made magnesium a drastically less abundant mineral in our bodies, with levels significantly lower than anything experienced before. Since 1940, levels of magnesium within our diet have declined by a whopping 21%. Our need for magnesium has never been so great & a magnesium-rich body will be stronger, more flexible and better able to resist both physical and emotional stress.
Thankfully, BetterYou transdermal magnesium provides a fast and effective method of remineralisation. Applied directly onto the skin, magnesium is quickly absorbed into the epidermis, through to the blood vessels and muscles beneath, completely bypassing the digestive system where many nutrients, including magnesium, are poorly absorbed.
The Benefits, functions and uses of Magnesium:
regulating nerve and muscle function supporting healthy pregnancy and lactation Reduction in tiredness and fatigue Improving exercise and sports performance maintaining optimum blood sugar & pressure levels manufacturing and supporting protein, bone, teeth and DNA health.
Magnesium is found naturally in many foods. Though it is only in small amounts, some of its highest concentrations can be found in:
- Whole grains - Pumpkin Seeds - Almonds
- Oats - Prickly pears - Dairy products
- Legumes - Buckwheat - Quinoa
- Edamame - White potatoes - Soy cheese
- Green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach & Swiss chard
- And my personal favourite, Peanut Butter
What If You’re not getting Enough?
A magnesium deficiency used to be unusual, but low levels in the body can cause changes in biochemical pathways and progressively result in the development of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke, which these days are scarily on the rise. Individuals with type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, alcohol dependence and the elderly are at risk of a magnesium deficiency. The initial symptoms of inadequate magnesium levels include nausea, weakness, fatigue and vomiting. If you are experiencing these symptoms, consult your doctor or nutritionist immediately.
Magnesium deficiency has been linked to many conditions, some of which include:
So What You Can Do?
A healthy person with normal needs should consume at least 220mg (for women) and 260mg (for men) of magnesium daily. What’s great about BetterYou transdermal Oil, is the directions on the bottle that inform you, 200mg of Magnesium are being absorbed per 10 sprays.
Try something new, if diet or pill supplements have failed for you in the past, you’ve got nothing to lose from trying out the transdermal benefits of magnesium. If you’re a visual learner or would just like to know more about how this is the fastest, most efficient way to ingest & absorb vital nutrients, check out this 30 second video at BetterYou.com
As with calcium, magnesium is one of the minerals that accumulates in the body the fastest. Therefore, the more calcium you take without the balancing effect of magnesium, the more symptoms of a magnesium deficiency and calcium excess you may experience. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of this & ensure that your intake of magnesium and calcium are as balanced as possible & adequate daily.
Top Tip - Soaking oxalate rich foods such as spinach before consuming them may increase the bioavailability of magnesium. This is good to know before beginning your meal preparation.
Did You Know?
Up to 60% of magnesium is found in bone and teeth, with the rest found in muscle and extracellular tissue.
Magnesium can only be found in small amounts in food, and cannot be obtained from one singular food group. It is advisable therefore, to have a balanced and varied diet including plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains & if in doubt, consult your nutritionist & use a trusted supplement like the spray oil mentioned, topical Magnesium lotion, body cream and Bath flakes soak.
Alcohol intake increases the loss of magnesium through excretion. It has been shown that alcohol intake is associated with a magnesium deficiency so for those of us who might like an extra glass of wine of an evening, be mindful to refuel your magnesium levels accordingly by using ‘Magnesium Sleep’ lotion, by BetterYou, before going to bed.
How the Magnesium Magic works:
Reduction of Muscle Pain
Magnesium oil offers treatment to muscle ache related problems. It helps reduce swelling and joint aches, and also treats muscle spasms and sore muscles. The direct application of magnesium oil or spray is one of the best ways to reduce muscle pain with the help of Magnesium. It’s the most efficient way to deliver the mineral to the site of pain directly, so that it can quickly relieve muscle pain, cramps and fatigue, reduce inflammation and encourage the regeneration of tissues.
Improving Relaxation, Mood and Sleep
Magnesium is said to have a positive effect on GABA receptors in the brain. This helps to relax and improves a person’s sleep, which with a rise in suffers of Insomnia in recent years, is useful to know!
Preventing Sports Injuries
Applying magnesium oil before physical workouts and sports helps avoid muscle tear and sports-related injuries. Magnesium is also very beneficial for post-workout recovery and many athletes swear by it as it relieves pain associated with muscle soreness and inflammation. Even non-athletes can highly benefit from applying Magnesium topically before and after exercise. Regular application of topical magnesium can even increase flexibility, strength and endurance. So it seems, ’Not flexible enough to practice Yoga', is no longer an acceptable excuse!
Healthy Glowing Skin
Topical Magnesium also offers regenerative and healing effects on the skin. For thousands of years, humans have applied minerals topically in order to soothe skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema, myself included. Many people with such skin conditions travel to the dead sea each year for the magnesium-rich waters & their healing benefits. In addition, Magnesium has anti-allergenic and anti-wrinkle effects and helps combat acne. Win, Win, Win!
Less Migraines - Yes Please!
A lot of research has indicated that optimal levels of Magnesium can prevent migraines. Although it isn’t an acute treatment for symptom relief, there are less instances of headaches and migraines for those who have sufficient levels of magnesium in their bodies. Regular magnesium supplementation can reduce the frequency of migraines, as migraine sufferers have lower levels of intracellular magnesium during acute migraine attacks.
Better Body Functionality
Getting enough magnesium is important for every cell in our body. It detoxifies the cells and maintains normal nerve and muscle function as well as steady cardiac beats. Furthermore, it keeps the bones strong and boosts the body’s immunity power.
Topical or transdermal Magnesium is definitely the new must-have product for health professional practices and patients for home use. Magnesium deficiency is so widespread that at least three out of four adults in developed countries should actively increase their intake — especially to prevent serious chronic illnesses.
Transdermal magnesium therapy is a powerful new tool that combines the healing power of the body’s largest organ, the skin, with the healing properties of one of the most vital minerals. I’ve been so impressed with the new technology that BetterYou provides & if that wasn’t impressive enough, it’s also fantastic to know that the plastic bottles containing the magnesium are also 93% bio-based, plant-based plastic! As a conscious consumer, I just love discovering & partnering with amazing brands we can trust!
Ok so we’ve covered all the science and fact, now it’s time to take action.
Join me in the following 60 second video, where I break down my
10 Easy steps to Find your Magnisi-zen!
Step 1 - Take a Relaxing Bath or, if like myself you only have a shower available, take a rejuvenating foot bath using 2 cups Magnesium flakes in warm water for a 20 minute soak.
Step 2 - Alternate Nostril Breathing, also known as Nadi Shodhana. This pranayama technique is great for balancing the nervous system and works by covering one nostril while you inhale through the other, release that nostril and block the opposite side, exhale, inhale, switch, exhale, inhale, switch and so on for at least 10 breaths but for up to 15-20 minutes if you have time, for maximum effects. Why not combine with your foot bath or relaxing bath soak!
Step 3 -Spinal Movement, move your spine forward, back, side to side, twist, circle and move however feels good for you in this moment.
Step 4 - Neck Articulation, just as we did with the spine, move your neck slowly and mindfully (please bare in mind that this video is sped up x 6) in all directions. These days the use of smart phones and laptops are decreasing the mobility and functionality of our necks and spines, so the more frequent your movement breaks, the better!
Step 5 - Clasping the hands behind your back or holding elbow to elbow, open the front of your shoulders & heart.
Step 6 - Single or double-wrap the arms, inhale and raise you elbows toward the ceiling, opening the back of the shoulders.
Step 7 - Yogi Squat, also known as Malasana to Rag Doll (Wide leg forward fold) x 10 mindful breaths. Breathe deep, make space, release your built up tension.
Step 8 - Gentle Assisted Neck Twists. From your Malasana, rest the head into the hands comfortably and twist a little more with each exhale as long as it feels good for you.
Step 9 - Self-massage whilst replenishing those Magnesium levels using BetterYou, Magnesium range. Pay special attention to the souls of the feet & heel pressure points and any aching muscles you are experiencing.
Step 10 - Legs up the Wall Pose, Savasana. This is a deeply restorative pose which aids in eliminating stress, calming the central nervous system and improving sleep.
Thank you all for joining me. I am loving feeling like the best version of myself with a little helping hand from BetterYou and I hope many more of you rebalance your nutrient levels, get moving & feel your best selves with their help too!
All my Love,
